When a part of Yugoslavia, May Day was more often called International Workers’ Day and celebrated with pomp and style as a pro-Communist holiday. Today in Slovenia, however, celebrations are more modest. In part, they focus on family and fun and a simple break from one’s day-to-day routine.
Also, people light bonfires on May Day Eve or wear a red carnation. These kinds of traditions have ancient roots and go back at least to Roman days when spring festivals welcomed warmer weather in late April or early May.
