Labour Day 2024, 2025 and 2026 in Slovakia

Labour Day in Slovakia is celebrated every 1 May, as it is in much of the rest of the world. This is a holiday to celebrate the contributions of workers to the economy and society, and also a time to highlight where progress still needs to be made towards fair and safe working conditions.

Slovakia has celebrated Labour Day on 1 May for many decades, and May Day traditions go back even further, in fact, to ancient times. Today, more than 80 countries celebrate Labour Day as a public holiday, most of them doing so on the first of May.

In modern times, Labour Day springs from the Haymarket Riots in Chicago, USA, in 1886. As these workers’ riots took place on 1 May, some people began commemorating them as early as 1890. Soon, the tradition went global, with the Soviet Union and its satellite states like Czechoslovakia observing it with huge parades each year.

After the fall of Communism and the breakup of Czechoslovakia, Labour Day continued to be celebrated in what is today Slovakia. There are still some protests and pro-socialist parades, but nothing like the “glory” of the past. It’s become more of a family outing day to most people these days.
