The Assumption of Mary has been a church tradition since at least the 4th Century A.D., but it was not an officially recognised Catholic dogma until the 1950 declaration of Pope Pious XII.

Pilgrimages, parades, fireworks, praying to Mary in public and private, attending grandiose masses to honour the “Holy Virgin”, and more are common fare in Andorra on this day. Cultural and religious traditions merge in Assumption Day in Andorra, and family gatherings and feasts make it as much a private affair as a public one.

The skiing is gone in the mid-summer heat, but Andorra has beautiful scenery and many rich historical sites and cultural festivals to attend. Many visit Andorra this time of year, and the locals get out on short trips and vacations as well.
