In Slovakia, All Saints’ Day has been an official state holiday since only 1994, but it has been celebrated in the country for centuries. Although mostly a Roman Catholic tradition, All Saints’ Day is also celebrated by others in Slovakia. Eastern Orthodox believers observe it too but on the first Sunday after Pentecost instead of on 1 November.
The main thing Slovakians do on All Saints’ Day is gather in churches to pray for deceased relatives and friends. They also listen to sermons by priests. These messages normally stress the good example the saints have set for others and urge people to follow in their footsteps.
