The date of the holiday changes each year based on the centuries-old calculations that determine the Christian Ecclesiastical Calendar, such that the date of Easter Sunday can be anytime between 22 March and 25 April.

Eastertime is a welcome period off from work for those involved in Svalbard’s mining and fishing industries. And kids love to get out of school just as the weather begins to warm up a bit in this cold northern land.

There is no Easter bunny in Svalbard or in Norway, but everyone paints and eats as many Easter eggs as they can. Foods of the season include lamb, which is normally the main dish, oranges, chocolates, Easter cake, Easter bread, and fish.

Many also take time to view the Northern Lights, which are often bright this time of year, go polar bear watching, snowmobile, ski, explore by dogsled, or visit ice caves along the melting edges of Longyear Glacier. Some go on cruises of the outlying islands, and a surprising number of tourists arrive. Homes are normally decorated with an abundance of the colour yellow, and Easter eggs may be decoratively hung from birch tree branches.
