A New Year holiday is observed every 1 January in Norway. New Year’s Eve celebrations on 31 December are complimented with a day of rest on the first day of January.

In Norway, 31 December and the days immediately leading up to it are an extremely festive and jovial time of year. The bidding farewell to the old year and the saying hello to the new is truly done with great gusto, especially on New Year’s Eve itself.
On 31 December, people eat, drink, be merry, and often break out into singing and dancing. They don’t wait until midnight arrives but go on for hours this way both before and after the clock strikes 12.
But at midnight, the cold northern sky lights up with colourful fireworks, and people come outside of their houses where they’ve been partying to raise a toast and wish each other a happy new year.
Norwegians also have some good luck traditions associated with the coming of the new year. Traditionally, eating porkwas supposed to bring abundance of food, while eating extra-sweet rice pudding with an almond in the centre also brings good fortune. The one who eats the almond gets the biggest dose of good luck.
