Ascension Day 2019 and 2020 in Norway

Ascension Day is a holiday in Norway to commemorate Jesus Christ’s ascension to heaven as recorded in the Bible. It is observed on the fortieth day of Easter – 39 days after Easter Sunday – and always fall on a Thursday.

Norwegian employers are known for allowing very generous vacation packages to their employees. And a large concentration of Norwegian holidays, including Ascension Day, occur in May or June, which leads to many three- and four-day weekends during the spring.

Many businesses in Norway will not only allow Ascension Day off but also encourage their workers to just take Friday off too. It seems to make more sense to have four solid vacation days than to interrupt them with a lone Friday at the office!

Although crowded around by Labour Day, Constitution Day, and Pentecost, there aren’t really any very special traditions for Ascension Day in Norway. Traditionally people go to church, eat a festive meal at home with family, and take the time to welcome the coming of spring.
