People in North Macedonia start preparing and getting excited about the coming of the new year from 1 December onward. They go shopping for New Year’s presents because New Year’s Eve, not Christmas Eve, is the main time to exchange gifts. Many nowadays also go on short family vacations around 31 December.
And if that wasn’t enough, some North Macedonians again celebrate New Year’s Day on 14 January, in accord with the Julian Calendar. This is referred to as “Old New Year” and is not quite as vigorously celebrated anymore, but some families still gather together to have a second party and enjoy each other’s company.
